The Richmond Bridge Association was founded over 60 years ago. The purpose of the RBA is to encourage the game of bridge as a social, recreational, and competitive activity and to strive to preserve, promote, and stimulate interest in duplicate bridge in Central Virginia.
The RBA has over 900 members in the area designated as Unit 109 by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). Unit 109 includes the cities of Colonial Heights, Emporia, Fredericksburg, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond and the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Essex, Fauquier, Goochland, Greensville, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince George, Rappahannock, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Sussex, and Westmoreland.
Unit 109 is part of District 6 (Virginia and Maryland) of the American Contract Bridge League. District 6 and District 7 (the Carolinas and Georgia) have formed the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference (MABC) for the purpose of scheduling regional events.
- The RBA holds its annual business meeting and dinner/game each May, at which awards are given for area honors as well as for the Mini-McKenney and Ace of Clubs race winners for the previous year.
- The RBA hold elections for officers and board members in May of even years.
- The RBA sponsors a Christmas charity game and dinner each year to give money to the local Christmas Mother and food and money to the Central Virginia Food Bank.
- The RBA holds its Unit Game on the second Wednesday of each month at the Bridge Center in Richmond.
- The RBA (Unit 109) sponsors club games throughout the Richmond area, as far north as Fauquier County and as far south as Clarksville.
- There are currently about 15 clubs in Unit 109.
- The RBA sponsors Friendly Bridge, learning and playing opportunities for beginners and intermediates.
- The RBA sponsors several Sectional Tournaments every year and two non life-master Sectional Tournaments.
- MABC sponsors a Memorial Day Regional Tournament in Richmond every odd year. Even year MABC Memorial Day Regionals are held in Raleigh.
